A common question for both the artists and visitors attending the Festival for the first time,
is whether Yuejin Harbor is, or was, an actual working harbor?

The history of this waterfront space from rice paddy, to seaport, to river port, to today’s recreational park, offers both the inspiration and the conflict which is at the heart of this year’s Festival theme. Following the introduction of the cultural workers and using different imagination, the festival will take you back to the past when Yuejing still the harbor city.

The festival celebrates and explores the passing of time, the forces of nature, and the impact of people and culture on the landscape. What was once a thriving and prosperous waterway, now welcomes families and children to play by the water. Only the serene rice paddies lining the river and canals remain unchanged. This year at Yuejin Harbor, we follow footsteps and the voices of the dock workers, the fishermen and the farmers who have shaped the waterfront and the city. As you explore this year’s festival allow your imagination to see the harbor as it once was, as it is and perhaps how it could be in the future.

Compared to the illusion, the mirage is a true optical phenomenon. In an illusion, there is a virtual image that can be captured by a camera. But the mirage can only exist in the imagination. When history is written through the interpretation of words and images what we see is a mirage. Parklands become busy, boisterous docksides, and still waters are filled with the wash and spray of boats. The other fascinating thing to remember about a mirage, is that we are all bound to see something different. Perhaps what we want or hope to see.

“From one part to the other, the city seems to continue, in perspective, multiplying its repertory of images: but instead it has no thickness, it consists only of a face and an obverse, like a sheet of paper, with a figure on either side, which can neither be separated nor look at each other. ”
— Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
